Is there a good time to visit Spiti Valley?

Spiti is a stunning Himachal Pradesh valley. The summer season is the finest time to visit Spiti. There are two ways to go to Spiti. The one via Manali is Manali – Rohtang Pass – Gramphu – Chattru – Kunzum Pass – Kaza (Spiti Valley); the other is Shimla – Kinnaur – Nako – Sumdo (Spiti Valley) – Tabo – Kaza. Before organizing a Spiti visit, it’s a good idea to know when the ideal season is. Here is a seasonal breakdown of Spiti to assist you with trip planning.

The months of March through June are ideal for visiting Spiti. Those looking for a calm holiday should go to Spiti during this season, which runs from March to June and with temperatures ranging from 0 to 15 degrees Celsius. Spiti’s winters are only for the brave. During the winter, the Manali-Kaza highway is closed, making road connectivity uncertain. During this season, the snow leopard trip is one of the most popular activities. It is advised to avoid visiting Spiti during the monsoon season (July-September) since the continual severe rainfall, accompanied by landslides and slick roads, might ruin your vacation mood.

Summer is the greatest season to explore this remote yet beautiful region of Himachal Pradesh, which runs from May to October. It is the only time of year when the roadways are free of ice. Lahaul & Spiti is hidden behind a heavy layer of snow throughout the winter season.

Season of the Summer (May-June):

This is the best season to explore Lahaul and Spiti Valley, with temperatures ranging from 8°C to 15°C. During this season, the weather remains mild and fairly chilly, allowing for a variety of outdoor and hiking activities. With the snow melting and the sky clearing, now is the ideal time to see the icy deserts of Spiti and the lush greenery of Lahaul.

Season of the Monsoons (July-September):

Because Lahaul and Spiti are located in the Himalayan rain shadow, they receive little or no rainfall during these months. While Lahaul and Spiti are one of the greatest places to visit during the monsoons, the roads going to these areas, particularly those that pass via Kinnaur and Manali, are prone to landslides.

Winter (November through April):

Winters in this region are exceptionally cold and brutal, with temperatures as low as -17°C and even lower in certain Spiti settlements. Lahaul and Spiti, on the other hand, is an appealing location for winter fans and snow aficionados at this time of year.

A- A vacation to Spiti is more than simply a trip there; it’s the entire journey into and out of the state that makes it memorable. The following is a list of sights to visit on your route from Shimla to Kaza and then on to Manali. (I’ve left out the touristic areas of Shimla and the surrounding areas, as well as Manali and the surrounding areas.) Tabo is home to a century-old monastery as well as meditative caves. The Bhabha valley trip, the Pin Parvati pass climb, and other treks all terminate in Parvati valley.

At the greatest altitude, there is a monastery and a gas station to visit!! A vacation to Spiti would be incomplete without a stop at KazaKei monastery (Ki Gompa / Key Gompa). Tashigang is known as the world’s highest inhabited settlement. Kunzum Pass, at 4590 meters, is a high-altitude pass. As you pass past the highway, keep an eye out for meadows and sheep graze.

Chandratal is approximately 14 kilometers from this deviation point, with 12.5 kilometers being motorable. Simply flip the itinerary if you’re touring Spiti from the Manali side. The journey is exhilarating!!

Q- Is it possible for someone with asthma to visit Spiti Valley?

Spiti Valley is located in the trans-Himalayan area, at a height of above 3500 metres. As a result, there is a scarcity of oxygen at such high elevations, and physical activities such as sprinting or even a quick stroll would cause shortness of breath or dyspnea.

However, this is a condition that may affect everyone, not just people with Asthma. A person with Asthma, on the other hand, maybe more susceptible to this than a healthy one. This does not rule out the possibility of an asthmatic visiting Spiti. Don’t smoke or drink, and get plenty of rest. Of course, one must be aware of AMS and its symptoms, as well as take the required measures. Before going on the vacation, please visit your doctor.

Q- Is it possible for someone with hypertension to visit Spiti Valley?

Spiti Valley is located in the trans-Himalayan area, at a height of above 3500 meters. As a result, at such high elevations, oxygen is scarce, and physical activities such as sprinting or even a rapid stroll will cause shortness of breath or dyspnea. However, this is a phenomenon that can affect everyone, not only people who have hypertension.

Before going on vacation, it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor. On the journey, acclimate properly and avoid smoking and drinking. Please keep AMS and its symptoms in mind and take the required measures.

Q- What should I bring with me on my vacation to the Spiti Valley?

For a thorough list of items to bring on a trip, we recommend reading our lengthy articles “List of things to bring on a vacation” here and “Tips for Carrying Clothes for a Spiti Valley Trip” here. A modest list of stuff you’ll want on a trip to Spiti (aside from your entrance and exit tickets) is provided below:

Clothing: a sufficient number of pairs (as determined by your route), a light jacket, a heavier overcoat, warm inners, stockings, a cap, and gloves are all required.

Electronics include a cellphone, a charger, a power supply, cameras, a batteries,  a memory card, and a tripod (if needed).

Sanitizer, Deodrants, facewash, comb, sanitary products, moisturiser, sunscreen, lip protection, shaving foam and razor, feminine care

Medical/medications: thermometers, first aid kid basically.

Some eatables.

Q- Should I bring oxygen canisters with me on a vacation to the Spiti Valley?

Spiti Valley is located in the trans-Himalayan area, at a height of up to 4500 meters. Because the supply of oxygen at such elevations is limited, thorough acclimatization is required before staying there. Please read our AMS page and do not disregard any symptoms.

Please keep in mind that oxygen from the cylinder is not a cure or a solution; it can only keep you alive for a short time; if the situation persists, descend quickly, otherwise, it might be fatal. For whatever it’s worth, you should also carry a pulse oximeter to keep track of your body’s oxygen levels.

The oxygen ‘cans’ are disposable and cost between 600 and 900 rupees. Carrying them from your city makes sense. The larger ones are cylinders that can be hired and returned, and you should obtain them in Chandigarh or Shimla owing to their weight.

Here are a few arguments in favor of bringing oxygen with you:

If you’re traveling with children or the elderly,

If you’re going on a trip with a large group,

If you’re coming from Manali and want to go straight to Chandratal, this is the route to take.

If you’re cramming your trip into your schedule due to time restrictions and aren’t adhering to the acclimatization requirements.

Q-  What permissions are necessary for a trip to the Spiti Valley?

The Inner Line Permit (ILP) regulation applies to the Spiti valley, which shares an international boundary with Tibet (China-TAR). Unlike Ladakh or Sikkim, however, you do not require any special permits.

When entering Spiti, you must register (at Sumdo if arriving from Shimla or Losar if coming from Manali) and provide your government ID (passport, voter’s ID, etc.) to prove you are an Indian citizen if required. You will require a Protected Area Permit (PAP) to access Spiti if you are a foreign citizen.

If you’re coming from that direction, you may acquire your PAP in Shimla. If you’re coming from Manali, you may acquire it from Kaza. Aside from that, there is no requirement for a permit to visit Spiti. Please see this page for further information about Spiti PAP.

Please keep in mind that if you wish to visit Spiti via Manali, your car will require permission to pass Rohtang Pass. You can also get the permit online. More information may be found here.
